After nine years, University of Nairobi (UoN) student leader Ngaruiya KJ finally graduated from the university. “Finally, I’m humbled and thank all the great souls that spent night vigils with me hoping to see the brightness of this new day. Your resilience encouraged me that we could not be wrong. After nine years, I have got my degree,” he wrote in the popular Facebook page “Comrades Forum”. Despite travelling for studies and graduating in South Africa, he vowed to complete his UON degree. Ngaruiya was an aspirant for the seat of Students Organisation of Nairobi University (SONU) chair on several occasions and controversially lost. Despite not making it to the chairman’s position, his name is mentioned alongside that of other great SONU officials like the late Tito Adungosi, CD Otieno, Karl Marx, Mwandawiro Mgangha, Solomon Muluri, Wafula Buke and socialist Benedict Wachira. Ngaruiya has often claimed that his numerous suspensions and expulsions from the university were worsened by his differences with the administration.
